Run 4 Eyes

2020 Spring Marathon-A-Thon: Running 3 Marathons in 3 Months in 3 Countries to Raise Money for Macular Degeneration

Welcome To Run 4 Eyes...

*This blog WAS the story of my efforts to run a '2020 Spring Marathon-A-Thon' and raise money to help find a cure and better treatments for Macular Disease. Unfortunately, when you're a septuagenarian runner 'stuff' is liable to happen. Injury struck and the Grand Plan came unstuck. For the painful details please read my February post, "Bad News".

*I wrote the above before the Coronavirus struck. I'm now sort of happy to report that I have been able to defer two of my marathons (DC and London) until next year and am awaiting confirmation of a deferment for Edinburgh. I say, "sort of happy" because obviously it's not a happy situation we find ourselves in and I am desperately sorry for everyone who has lost family or friends and for those working on the 'sharp edge' of all this.

Now, a short commercial: If you would like to help me reach my sponsorship target and don't necessarily want to read the blog, please just click here to go directly to my JustGiving Page... easy as that!

A few years ago I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Here are a few facts about the disease, which can take many forms and has a variety of causes:

  • In 2015 Macular Disease affected 6.2 million people globally;
  • Macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK;
  • There is currently no cure for Macular Disease;
  • Treatment, when appropriate, involves monthly injections into one or both eyeballs.

I'm one of the lucky ones. As of this writing only my left eye is affected. However, my sight will never again be normal, and it could start to deteriorate again at any time. In fact, after a period of remission, I recently had a relapse and have had to begin injections, again. And there's no guarantee that my right eye will not be affected at some point.

Although I remain optimistic that I will continue to lead a normal life, I want to take the opportunity now, through running, to raise money towards research into finding a cure and better treatments... and to provide much-needed support for those who have not been as fortunate as I.

I was successful in securing a 'Good for Age' place in the 2019 London Marathon and with your help I raised £7,000.78.  This year, 2020, I again won a 'Good for Age' place and was planning to run not just one, but THREE marathons... in three countries... in three months: March, April, and May 2020.

Alas, this will not happen (not this year, anyway), but I still I need YOUR help!
