Welcome To Run 4 Eyes...

Please note that I have been having a few issues with the website.
My technical guru is doing everything she can to get them sorted out, but, in the meantime, if you would like to donate but don't trust the security, please go directly to justgiving.com and look for my 2021 fundraiser at /run4eyes2021. ...and thank you for your ongoing support!

But if you're OK with it, you can click this link to go directly to www.justgiving.com/run4eyes2021

This blog is the story of my efforts to raise funding to help find a cure and better treatments for Macular Disease. Last year I was thwarted by injury and Covid-19 in my attempt to run three marathons, so this year I decided not to make my fundraiser specific to any one event.  As I turn 74 years old, this year, my plan is to 'Run My Age' (on average) every month in 2021. Some months I may fall a bit short, but overall I hope to meet--and possibly exceed--my goal of 888 miles for the year.

But first, a short commercial: If you would like to help me reach my sponsorship target and don't necessarily want to read the blog, please just click here to go directly to my JustGiving Page... easy as that!

A few years ago I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Here are a few facts about the disease, which can take many forms and has a variety of causes:

  • Macular Disease affects more than 6.2 million people, globally;
  • Macular disease is the leading cause of blindness in the UK;
  • There is currently no cure for Macular Disease;
  • Treatment, when appropriate, involves monthly injections into one or both eyeballs.

I'm one of the lucky ones. As of this writing only my left eye is affected. However, my sight will never again be normal, and it could start to deteriorate again at any time. In fact, after a period of remission, I recently had a relapse and have had to begin injections, again. And there's no guarantee that my right eye will not be affected at some point.

Although I remain optimistic that I will continue to lead a normal life, I want to take the opportunity now, through running, to raise money towards research into finding a cure and better treatments... and to provide much-needed support for those who have not been as fortunate as I.

I still hope to run at least a couple of marathons this year, including the London Marathon, now to be held in October. Other possibles are:

  • Edinburgh in May
  • Manchester in October, which, coupled with London will mean 2 marathons in 2 weeks!
  • And the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon to be held in the Texas city in December

But overall, the emphasis will be to run a consistent 74 miles every month!

...and I need YOUR help, please!
